You may not believe your eyes...I do still exist.
Most of my projects have been happening over at 504 Main. I just found it a little overwhelming to maintain 2 blogs...
but I do have an announcement....

Tips for a Gracious Bride

We've all heard of Bridezillas, but really is that how you want to be remembered? It may get you on TV, but it won't score you any points...with anyone! You may be wearing white today...but that is not forever. Grace and courtesy is always becoming. Here are a few tips for being a gracious bride...it looks good on everyone!

1. Just because others do not know proper etiquette, doesn’t mean you should ignore it.
2. Be humble. You may be a bride now, but soon you will re-enter life as a mere mortal.
3. Respect tradition, but give it your own personal spin.
4. Mind your manners. “Please” and “Thank you” will take you a long way.
5. These people are your friends and family – they do not work for you, but are here to help you…because they love you.
6. Don’t assume anything - ask questions and get the details in writing.
7. These people are your GUESTS! Don’t keep them waiting and don’t ask them to pay for anything.
8. Treat your vendors kindly, and they will do the same for you.
9. Thank you notes are a must. It is never wrong to express your thanks to your parents, your guests, and your vendors.
10. If it doesn’t feel right don’t do it. When in doubt trust yourself.

Wedding Insight from a Former Real Bride

Over at 504 Main a few weeks ago I had Kristen from Whose Watching the Baby link up a very interesting post about weddings and negotiating. I liked Kristen's frank attitude and insight and asked her If I could share it here.

I definitely have my ideas of do's and don'ts but there are so many different situations and circumstances out there, listening to others is extremely helpful. I also feel in wedding planning brides can learn so much from other and former brides, so with no further adieu, here is Kristen's scoop!

Unfortunately for my mom and dad, I didn't really get good at this until well after I was already married, and getting married again just to take advantage of the bargain didn't go over very well with my husband. The current recession isn't hurting buyers' negotiating power, either, so this could be a unique opportunity for those currently affianced to marry above their station - or maybe just wed above their station, like at the Four Seasons instead of the VFW. I have lots of friends and family who are planning weddings, and below is my standard advice. But first:

{Wait! Important Caveat!}

{If you have a place and a date with which you have absolutely fallen in love, I can't really help you. This is also true if you have a very specific vision, down to the last eensy weensy detail. It's like anything else you buy - if you're not willing to walk away from it, you have no negotiating power. Just do me a favor: at the very least, don't tell the salesperson how much you just love it and that you'd pay anything to have your wedding at their hotel/country club/livestock show and rodeo. Pretend to be a hardass. Play hard to get. There are too many deals out there right now to just hand them the sale!}

First things first: If you really want to save a pretty penny on your reception, you have to be flexible. The more flexibility, the better. Below are the options that you can toggle to make the most of the money you have budgeted for your reception. After you've chosen where you're willing to make some sacrifices, you must put together a Request for Proposal, and let the venues that you are willing to consider come to you with their best offers. We'll get to that later this week, but first the hard part: deciding what's important to you.

Day of Week, Time of Day

Saturday evening weddings are the most expensive, and Saturday brides will find their venue of choice least likely to work a deal on price. They're the most desirable, there are only about 48 good ones in a year,* and these receptions almost always include lots of expensive alcohol. Willing to get married on a Sunday morning? A Friday night? Even Saturday during the day can be a bargain if you negotiate it right. This leads us to our asterisk... There are only 48 good Saturdays in a year because some of them will fall on days that are not popular with the wedding crowd. Willing to get married on the Saturday after Thanksgiving? Bank! How about the Saturday before Easter? Perfect, if it works for you and your guests. These days have very little demand, and your wedding venue will likely leap at the chance to fill these empty days on their calendar.

Menu

As a general rule, buffet meals are more expensive for the caterer than plated meals served at the table. This is because the venue has to prepare extra food, and replenish the food eaten for whatever amount of time is agreed upon in the event contract. If you are willing to go completely 'chef's choice' on your menu, you can save big bucks. You're letting your caterer take advantage of economies of scale in his purchasing and in preparation of your food. He may choose to match your menu to one being served concurrently in a different ballroom, or order the same protein for your event as the one he's serving the night before. You can still specify the type of protein and number of choices available to guests, and agree to settle on a menu about two weeks before the date of the reception.

Booze

There is no reason to ever pay for an open, or 'hourly', bar. It will never work out in your favor. Caterers know this, and that's why many offer only this option in their wedding packages. The type of bar you want is called 'consumption'. You set a limit that you're willing to spend, and the caterer discretely lets you (or your designee) know during your reception when the tab is getting close to the predetermined limit. At this point you can decide whether you want to up the limit and keep serving, or make it last call.

There are lots of ways to limit alcohol costs, such as sticking to wine on the table or one signature cocktail. Many brides and grooms toy with the idea of bringing in their own alcohol, but beware: although laws vary from state to state, many venues with their own liquor licenses, such as hotels and country clubs, will not let you bring in your own alcohol unless you have some unusual preference that they can't get through their distributor. Even this is usually subject to a corkage fee - watch for hidden costs!

Lead Time

If you reserve your date a year in advance, you're generally not going to get a 'deal'. They may tell you that you are - free champagne toast, anyone? - but you aren't. They still have plenty of time to fill the date, and if it's not you, there's a good chance someone else will come along. Wait until 4 months out? It's getting dicey. Three months out? Name your price.

Room Setup

This is not the richest source of potential savings, but it's up there: Are you willing to be flexible with how your guests sit in the venue, or do you insist on rearranging the furniture to suit your own personal chi? The caterer has to pay someone to come in and schlep all of those tables and chairs around. If you're willing to go with the room arrangement of the wedding before you, it might give your caterer or reception location a little more flexibility in their pricing. This may mean that your guests sit at long tables when you expected them to be at round ones, but we're about saving dollars here, right?

Hotel Rooms

If your ideal list of reception locations includes any hotels, make sure you let the salesperson know at first contact how many out of town guests you expect will be staying the night, and when they will likely arrive and depart. If your guests stay on site, this increases the profitability of the event for your vendor, and they may be more flexible in your out of pocket costs.

DIY! Guest Book Goes to the Birds

I think guest books - or at least the idea of recording who was at your wedding and any special wishes - are important. One of my favorite projects, or even challenges you might say, is to find new ways to do just that. So, to kick off the year, I created a guest book vignette for a wedding, shower, birthday, or any other special occasion...like New Years!

I may not plan weddings as much as I used to but the thrill, the romance, the creativity of brides and grooms and the events they create is still close to my heart. Many, so many couples ask how to create a guestbook without it being a guestbook. Did that make sense? The guest book is one of my favorite projects to revamp.

Now, I love little birdies and would be truly giddy to do a stylish birdie inspired wedding. Until then, I have created this display that can be used for a non traditional guestbook at a wedding.

The back of the cards read "draw a picture - write a poem - share your words of wisdom." The guests would select a card write or draw a special something to the couple and drop it in a large glass bowl when done.I would do 3 of these displays and then have the remainder of the cards in a pretty crate or basket - depending on the size of the wedding.

The whole point of this is to get guests to eave creative well wishes in their own unique way. Have pens and markers, and even crayons out for the guests to go to town!

I do think this would be FAB if you hung the branch with pretty ribbon and had the birdie postcards hanging from the wires.

See I am all excited talking weddings!!

For those non-weeding folks, you can also do something similar at a bridal shower, baby shower, birthday party, or other special event like New Years.

The key component to this display are the absolutely fabulous Chelsea Groves Postcards from Moo. As soon as I saw them, I loved them. Each and every different bird is sweet and colorful and chic and I think I may be framing some...I think I know the perfect place!

Supplies

Moo postcards in design of choice - be careful you may be over there for days! So many GORGEOUS choices.
Gorilla Glue
Branches (I used only one branch for this display...and found it in the yard)
Drill with small bit (how technical is that)
16 gauge copper wire (or color of choice)
Moss, optional
Wire cutters

The holidays are a very popular time for popping the big question. It makes good sense really. If you live far from family and friends, chances are a visit will be happening so that you can celebrate the good news with loved ones.

I became engaged on Christmas. My husband did not do anything too crazy, but much to my surprise, planned a simple and meaningful proposal. And that is what matters most...that it is meaningful. Here's a peek into my engagement story:

We spent the morning together and we each had a few gifts for the other. I cannot remember what I got him (probably something lame...I am a horrible gift-picker-outer!). He gave me a new camera. Together we read the directions and put the film in (back in the days of film). Once it was up and running I opened my other present, while he practiced with the camera. All the while I opened this big ginormous box, he snapped away. Of course inside was an engagement ring! He was was sly with that camera gift - we have all the moments and memories of me owning my ring box on film! Tricky!

I will admit I made my hubby stop by the store on the way to my parents house on Christmas Day so I could purchase a bridal magazine or two.

It is a busy time too on so many levels. I have seen many a bride jump straight into her planning. I have actually received phone calls (messages) on Christmas from the newly engaged asking to schedule an appointment. Now, that is quick!

Take some time...revel in the excitement of being engaged...enjoy the family and friends and love that is in the air. And rest up and read up...come January competition is stiff for vendors and locales.

Great Ideas for Your Wedding!

I am always thrilled when I find something fun and new to do at a wedding, especially when it is a detail that brings even more meaning to an already wonderful occasion. Here are a couple of idea I ran across that are fabulous and have so much potential to work with so many weddings.

Jenny at Simcoe Street had a great idea for her wedding too!

Check out what she created for her wedding guest book table.

"What we did was get wedding photos of as many of our guests as we could - our aunts, uncles, great aunts and uncles, grandparents, parents and friends. Sometimes this meant calling the kids of our parents' friends and asking them to secretly scan and email us the pic. For a lot of them, our Moms had copies of pictures that we made copies of and used. Everyone was completely surprised by this, and it was fun to show weddings of all styles and decades and highlight the amazing tradition of weddings."

This idea is fun and what a great way to celebrate marriage!

This is Going to Cost You! The Budget

Over the last several years, "big" weddings have become hugely popular for brides and big business for wedding vendors. During this time, a slew of "urban legends for wedding planning" have sprung up. Many brides get caught up in these myths as they seem simple enough and, on the surface, sometimes even logical. Don't be fooled. Dispelling the unfortunately too common fallacies of wedding planning will help you avoid disappointment and disaster. No one ever said planning a wedding was easy.

MYTH: I know exactly what it takes to pull off a wedding, and I will not go over budget.

TRUTH: There is a good chance you probably will. Many brides "forget" to include some necessary expenses and/or incur additional costs at the last minute. Some brides also "fall in love" with certain items and must have them whether or not they were originally budgeted for. Work with a trusted professional wedding planner to detail out a budget for you based on your needs. Professional planners deal with budgets all of the time and know what costs are involved in a wedding.

As a final precaution, take 5-10% off of your budget total and hold it back for those unexpected expenses - if you need it, it will not push you over the edge, and if you don't you will have some extra cash for the honeymoon (or bank account!).

DIY...Tattooed Fruit and Pumpkins

My mind went crazy with ideas.

I wanted to try something new!

{at least I have not seen this before}

How excited am I!!!!

I did all of this WITH SCISSORS AND AN EXACTO KNIFE.

NO MACHINE NECESSARY to use these cool products!

Here's what you need:

You just need the Silhouette Tattoo Paper and some fruit or a pumpkin.

Now,I discovers that the bumpier the object {like all those ridges on a pumpkin} the trickier it is to get it to stick...but it is just a learning curve...after a try or two...I got it!

The pumpkins were more challenging than the pears because the pears were smoother.

Here's what to do:
Just decide on a design, print it out using your computer and printer, apply the adhesive, cut out - with your scissors, apply to the surface!
DONE and quick!
And these are the easiest to apply tattoos I have ever tried!

Who Are All These People? Wedding Planners and Location Managers

There seems to be a never ending list of myths

when it comes to wedding planning...

well, let's start talking about the reality!

MYTH: I do not need a wedding planner. The location/venue/catering manager will help me.

TRUTH: Simply speaking, a location manager is not the same as a wedding planner. The location manager works for the venue and the wedding planner works for you! The three of you (+ the groom) should work together to ensure your wedding runs smoothly.

That said, it works differently at all locations, so you cannot make assumptions. There are venues where the location managers (sometimes called a catering or site manager) will work closely with you on all details from the moment you book the location until you leave the reception as husband and wife, offering vendors referrals, advice, and suggestions to assist you. Still, some venues work with a more hands-off approach, assisting you with details related to the venue (pricing, menu, times) and nothing more. In many instances, the location manager is onsite for the beginning of your wedding to ensure everything is ready to go but may leave sometime after the reception begins, leaving you in the hands of the banquet captain.

A wedding planner works independently of the venue and is hired by you, to be your advocate. Now, depending on what services you hire a wedding planner for, she can be available to accompany you on appointments, taste menus, assemble invitations, run errands, or to simply manage the wedding day. (Check back later in the week for the skinny on the different types of wedding planning services!)

So, don't get the services and responsibilities of wedding planners and location managers confused. Lastly, don't be surprised...ask questions, specific questions. Be sure you understand the extent of the assistance your location manager offers.

Happily Ever After Sign

I created this chic sign that can be used at the wedding...how fabulous would it be hanging on a garden gate for the guests to see as they exit, at the end of the aisle, or even as part of the couple's dining table decor...so many possibilities!

The sign could absolutely be customized with the wedding colors, a wedding date or the couple's names too. Oh yeah...I think this sign turned out pretty cute...so why not add different vinyl lettering for any occasion!

Simple Advice: Rehearsal Dinner

I am feeling very nostalgic today - it is my anniversary {you can read all about that craziness HERE}. I was thinking about all that happened before and during and after my wedding. I thought I would share some great advice with you.

Rehearsal Day for many couples. It is a crazy exciting day that is packed with emotions. If you are reading this and you are not yet married, let me tell you, you cannot even imagine the little (and sometimes big) "tiffs" I have seen between bride and groom on rehearsal day.

Why? As a bride (or groom), you have been working and planning to make this day perfect, and as the day approaches you are surrounded by family and friends, attending bridesmaids lunches and rehearsals, attending to all those last minute details...and probably have not seen a whole lot of your fiance...remember him, the man this is all for?

When I was a (crazy) bride, my Matron of Honor gave me the best advice ever - advice I passed on to the many brides I worked with over the years - spend some time with your man! You can make time for the manicurist...make time for the man! Even if all you can swing is driving with your fiance - and only your fiance - to the rehearsal dinner, do it!

1. Cut Boards ( 5 cut at 11", 2 cut at 11.5"). The two longer pieces are the front and back of the crate.

2. Bottom of crate: Take 3 cut pieces and run Gorilla Wood Glue along the edges. Make the bottom of the crate by pushing these together. Tape them with some Gorilla Tape to keep them tight while they dry.

3. Make the perimeter of the crate. Add Gorilla Wood Glue to the corners of the remaining cut pieces. Use Gorilla Tape to hold the four corners together. I actually formed the box around the base from the above step made it really easy to keep is all squared up and easy to see where the 2 longer pieces fit in.

4. Let dry completely.

5. Remove Gorilla Tape.

6. I hit in some nails to give it the hand made look and for character. I did 3 nails on the front and back and 1 for each base board. And I did one on each side.

7. Using my Dremel Multi-Max with the Sander, I sanded all over the box. I really wanted to take off the edges but also make certain areas appear more rounded and worn.

8. Wipe crate clean and apply wood stain. Let Dry.

9. Mix Glazing Medium with Water and Burnt Umber acrylic paint as per directions on bottle.

10. Apply glaze to entire crate and wipe off excess.

11. Come back in with a darker paint {Burnt Umber} and using a DRY brush hit the corners, edges, etc. to give some character. Think about where the crate would be worn.

12. Add some upholstery tacks for decoration (optional)
13. Add decor.

Transfer IT!**

My preferred decor for the box was the French word for Marriage "Le Mariage" {since I was a wedding planner and still love weddings, it seemed apropos}.

I simply printed it out using a French Script font on my computer onto T-shirt Transfer Paper. I think this would be fun with the couple name and wedding date on the other sides. Iron on decor - this take more time than when using this on a T-shirt or cloth item. They can easily be painted! I will be trying the waterslide decal method next time!

Mythical Monday! Thank You Notes

It's time for Mythical Mondays where we clarify
what really is and isn't true about...wedding planning.

MYTH: You have one year to write thank you notes.

TRUTH: A widely held belief that a bride and groom have one year to send thank you notes to their guests is beyond comprehension. How will the guest know you even received the carefully selected gift? Will you even remember what you received as wedding gifts in one year? How motivated will you really be in one year?

The confusion comes from the notion that a guest has up to one year to send a gift. In actuality, the newlyweds should attempt to get out any thank you's within a few weeks of returning from the honeymoon (a couple of months is really the maximum). Thank you's for gifts received before the wedding should be sent promptly. This goes for engagement, shower, and wedding presents sent to the home.

Thank You Cheat Sheet

Email, texts, and a general shout-out on your wedding web site are not acceptable. The written word still rules here.
Mention the gift. If it is a monetary gift you do not need to mention the amount, rather call it the "generous gift" or something similar.
Include how you plan to use it
Thank the guest for their generosity.
Add a personal sentiment if possible.
Sign your married name only after you are officially married.
Use your maiden name for anything thank you notes written prior to the ceremony, even if it is a wedding gift (i.e., shower gifts, a wedding gift sent to your home that arrives in the days or weeks prior to the wedding).

Sample Thank You Note:

Dear Uncle Jack,

Thank you so much for the place setting of formal china. We are so excited to host our first holiday meal on our china, and even more excited that you will be joining us. We are looking forward to seeing you there. Thank you for being a part of our wedding celebration.

With all of the time I spent working in the Los Angeles wedding industry, I know a lot of brilliant and talented wedding professionals. One of those talents is my friend Melissa who quite simply rocks. She knows her weddings. Currently she works at the Ebell of Los Angeles - one of the most gorgeous venues around...and writes for their BLOG...so all those lucky brides get to use her immense knowledge. Today I am sharing a little of that here.

Honeymoon Checklist

Hotel reservations? Check!
Flights booked? Check!!
Passport current? Uh..check?
Vaccinations up to date? Um…Hm.

Ah, yes, the honeymoon.

The ultimate vacation.

The bliss after the blowout bash.

Best way to enjoy it?

Be well prepared, well in advance.

Start early.

Three to one month prior to your wedding start your check list:

Make sure passports, vaccinations and travel itineraries are in place and up to date.
Confirm reservations for hotels, airlines, rental cars, even dinners, tours, snorkeling adventures and sky diving excursions the month prior to your travels.
Brag! Tell reservation desks, concierge, airlines representatives, everyone you talk to, that this is your honeymoon. You never know what bonuses or gifts might await you when you arrive.
Brides, make sure your tickets and reservations under your maiden name since all your identification will not have switched to married name in a short time. Alternative would be to have marriage license with you when traveling, but that may be challenging to arrange in time for your departure.
Check with your doctor about your destination and if there are medications to consider having while there. Renew prescriptions and have them on hand, too.
Got a dog? Cat? Bird? Arrange for kennel or home care.
Have the post office hold your mail - easy to do online at the USPS.com website
Set up automatic lighting system in your home – have the outdoor lights and / or indoor lamp set to come on at dusk and off at midnight (or have a trusted neighbor help you out with that.)
Ask the stores where you are registered to hold deliveries so boxes aren’t left at your front door.
Give your full itinerary to a parent or relative so you can be reached in case of emergency.
Pack your honeymoon luggage separately from your wedding day items. Give the wedding suitcase to a friend or family member if you aren’t returning home prior to travel.
Take out the garbage. Clear out the fridge.
Organize addresses: write thank you notes on the plane or send postcard thank you notes from your destination!

Your Photos Last a Lifetime!

Confession...I hate...not despise my wedding photographs...

I was sick and my photographer was, uh, less that wonderful

{although he had a great reputation}...

I was also a really lame bride.
I fell for the slick talking, Beverly Hills hype.

Maybe that is why I became a wedding planner...

I was tough and fair and honest when it came to the couple I worked with...

mainly so that they would not have the issues and problems I did

{which were totally avoidable}.

BUT you do not have to have these issues with your photography!

First there are well qualified reputable photographers in all price ranges.

You must do your homework though.

OK, this is turning into a whole different post.

Later in the week I will dive into choosing a photographer

and my opinions, etc. on the matter.

For now, I wanted to introduce you to my friend Cynthia's blog.

Cynthia is the owner of A Legendary Affair in Manhattan Beach, CA.

This is one of the original wedding resource centers.

Perfectly Pink and Green

PINK! PINK! PINK!

GREEN! GREEN! GREEN!

My two most favorite colors...E-V-E-R!

I am guessing it is because I NEVER had a pink room.

Yep, yellow Holly Hobbie it was for me!

I love color at weddings.

It evokes emotion and sets a tone.

Color doesn't have to be trendy...

you do not have to select what is

being touted in the magazines.

You do not have to settle.

Color reflects your style!

Choose what you like...

it is your wedding!

Anyway, I have been waiting for the right time to post this beautiful tablescape.

I worked on this tablescape with some other talented designers as part of a magazine shoot. I have been meaning to post it for awhile, but I never quite got around to it {surprise! surprise!}, until now! It is perfect for today...or any day!

A Lot of Color! A Lot of Spice!

Back when I was in L.A., I was the Co-Director for

the Association of Bridal Consultants-Greater Los Angeles.

In that position I had the opportunity to work with

amazing people on a daily basis.

Each month we would host a mixer for event professionals.

The goal was networking, education and

to introduce new products and ideas.

The following photos are from one of our events

held at Veranda's in Manhattan beach, California.

For this event went went with a "hip Moroccan" theme

and used non traditional colors of fuchsia, lime, and orange.

There were beautiful linens, chairs, and locale provided,

but working with a florist we transformed
the event using common items that had
great impact on the eyes and not on the budget.

Hollowed artichokes and orange halves held votives.

This added a bit of whimsy and also a fun way

to display common wedding decor.

Glass hurricanes held pillar candles, but interest

was created by placing dried fruits and nuts in the base...

bought in bulk...this was very inexpensive.

We used the spices only on the cocktail tables,

so their aroma did not interfere with the meal.

Spices were used freely!

Again, we bought spices in bulk

- look for whole, not ground, spices

such as coriander, anise, cinnamon sticks, bay leaves, etc.

Dates, figs, and other fruits also provided a

naturally fitting accent to the cocktail table decor.

The lanterns and other containers were all from Big Lots

and purchased at various times.

Only a few here and there matched, but the overall feel

of the containers was the same, so it worked.

The fabric draping is a combination of sheets bought on clearance, yardage of inexpensive fabric, and a print to bring it all to life. Extra large pillow forms were covered in cases made of sheets and loungers made of foam were placed throughout the garden.

Simple and inexpensive details using unexpected elements

were the key to this Hip Moroccan inspired soiree.

Here 3 super simple ideas to keep in mind!

#1 – Any wedding can be hip. This is a BIG country. What’s hip to a bride in CA may not be in style for bride in NY or appropriate for the bride in MO.

#2 - A hip bride has three essential beliefs: allocate money wisely, implement ideas effectively, and let personal style be your guide.

#3 - You can have a hip wedding by not getting caught up in what you think a wedding has to be and instead letting is be what you want it to be. There are very few “rules” that you need to follow (and most of those involve etiquette).

I first posted this back in September

{I think I hard 2 readers then}

but, I get this one particular question a lot.

So, I figured...let's revisit the mystery of the gift.

MYTH: The cost of the gift (received from the invited guest) should be equivalent to what the per-person cost of the meal is.

TRUTH: No. No. No. An invitation to a wedding is not a trade out. A guest is not expected to first of all even know what you are spending per-person, much less be forced to spend that amount on a gift. The bride or groom does not get to dictate the price range of their wedding gifts (even if they tried to do so with their registry!). Fanciful Chandelier

I love pretty things...probably why I love weddings.

A couple of months ago, over at 504 Main,

I created a Birthday Chandelier for my hubby.

I had every intention of redoing this project into

a fantastical wedding decoration...

but alas time has gotten away from me...

and besides Christie at Pretty Paper Book took this idea

and made it so beautiful and magical,

I thought I would just share her beautiful creation with you.

I will admit when I got married I did not know how to cook...

but I did register for an apron...

Maybe I thought that would inspire me...not so much!

BUT I bet if I would have had a super-cute apron

I would have been rockin' the Stand Mixer

and Food Processor a lot soon {they spent 7 years in the box}!

Bridal Beauty - What NOT To Do!

Back in L.A. when I was planning weddings full time, I used to always tell my brides "We have to start the ceremony on time...after that most things are a little flexible, but if we are late there, the whole day is late." A MAJOR key element in that is having professional hair and makeup artists to get the bride and bridal party ready and FABULOUS on time!

When it cam to bridal beauty, in my opinion there was no better company to call than Design Visage. Caren Lazarus and all of the ladies who work for her are amazing, top-notch, out of this world amazing hair and makeup stylists. She even helped me get out of a pickle once when the bride {without telling me} sent all her ladies down for a massage at "start time."

I asked Caren to share some "What NOT To-Do's" when it comes to bridal beauty. Here they are...heed her advice..she knows what she is talking about! In the past 25 years Caren has seen many mistakes and some obvious and some not so. With no further adieu, here it is, words of wisdom from Caren at Design Visage:

1. Do not purchase your hair accessories prior to the hair preview…..it is more important to choose something that goes with the hairstyle than match your dress….most accessories compliment any dress anyway! Best to choose a stylist that has a good selection of hair pins, flowers, feathers, combs, headbands. This way you can try the different styles with each hairstyle and pick the perfect “you”.
2. Be very prepared for the “preview’ hair and make-up session. The artist cannot read your mind and can only help you, not choose for you. Look through magazines (not just bridal…also trashy they often have wonderful hair and make-up looks) bring a selection of the photos and a photo of your dress to the preview.
3. SPEAK UP…..when you pay for a hair and make-up preview, don’t be afraid to tell the artist if you like what she/he is doing or not. A good bridal hair and make-up artist will want your input….since by the way it is your day. Ask before you book with the artist, their style….are they open to your suggestions…this is not the time to hire a “DIVA” hairstylist that decides to do their latest creation on your hair for your wedding…remember it’s all about you.
4. Check if the stylist is a single operation or a company, ask about their back-up plan….let’s face it emergency’s can happen….what will happen if she becomes ill the day before your wedding or gets a better offer, get a contract so you will be sure not to be the bride in waiting on your wedding day.
5. Ask about the wedding day policy….let’s say all your 8 bridesmaids, both moms and grandma decide to have hair and make-up services on the wedding. Is your artist equipped to handle all this in a timely manner. Will she just bring an assistant or another qualified hair and make-up artist or 2. You do not want to be getting ready for 8 hours….a qualified company will get everyone ready and happy in 3 to 4 hours….no matter how many services you require.
6. No airbrush tan on the wedding day….this is a service you, first need to do a practice one time to make sure you love it and second to see how their product looks on your skin….all products are not created equal. You don’t want to be an orange bride. The airbrush tan should be applied 1 to 3 days prior to the wedding. It will have time to blend nicely with your skin tone and the residue will have come off in the shower, not on your white dress.
7. All eyebrow waxing and threading should be done at least 3 to 7 days prior to the wedding. And any facial waxing for that matter. Did you know that when you are nervous you can swell more easily? Also a freshly waxed brow will not hold eye shadow….
8. A note on facials….probable one of the best things you can do for your wedding make-up…your make-up can only look as good as the skin underneath it. Although this is like an exercise program, you need to start as soon as possible. 6 months of monthly facials can do wonders for your skin….this way you can schedule that all important hydrating facial the week of your wedding. If you have not prepared your skin…DO NOT have your first facial any closer than 3 weeks prior to your wedding.
9. Don’t assume that you need to have an artist with your same ethnicity. A good make-up and hair artist can bring out the best in us all.

Q: We our having our wedding where we live which is across the country from where we grew up. We know most of the people that we are inviting will not come. Do we have to send save-the-date cards to those that we know will not come and we are just inviting because our parents want us to?

A: The answer to your question is YES, you do have to send save the dates to everyone invited...even if they live across the country and are your parents friends. Just make sure they are on the list definite guest list (or they will be once you send them the save the date). It just alleviates any potentially odd interactions ..."Oh, you got a save the date and we didn't...guess we were on the B-list until someone declined."

The Scoop on Save the Dates!
Save-the-Dates can be simple or totally elaborate. What is most important is that the cards let the guest know a wedding is being planned for a particular date. These cards have become immensely popular, as they give family and friends living and working throughout the country and the world, a little “heads up” that an important event is coming. Just remember that a Save-the-Date is not considered to be an invitation to anything, it is merely a precursor to the invitation, giving the guests time to make travel arrangements.

When to Send
The Save-the-Date card should be sent at least six months before the wedding date. If you are planning a destination wedding, live in a resort town, are planning a wedding during peak travel times, or know many of your guests plan their travels twelve months out, sending them earlier is always acceptable.

Wording the Save-the-Date
The basic wording is simple and includes the bride’s and groom’s name, sometimes the host’s name, date of the wedding and geographic location of the wedding. Some couples have more elaborate wording or include quotes, photos, or other special notes. The tone and the wording can be changed to reflect your style or theme. Think of a save the date as a movie trailer...a teaser for things to come.You may also include travel, tourist, and accommodation information, as well as your wedding web site. Here's a sample!

Creative Guestbooking

Hey everyone!

This is a repost from awhile back, but I thought...

there are always new brides, and it is getting

to be that time when Spring and Summer brides should be

thinking about guest book options...

So here it is, some scoop on creative guestbooking!

The idea, or should I say, tradition of a guestbook has been around for what seems like forever. Over the last several years the guest book has taken some twists and turns. Probably the most popular reincarnation of the guestbook has been the matted engagement photo, where guests sign their well wishes on the matting surrounding the photo. However, there are many other creative alternatives that deserve some time in the spotlight. I am going to spend a few posts here and there, highlighting some of the best guest book ideas I have seen or heard of.

For the first installment, I am going to start with a really easy and fun alternative. For one super fun couple I worked with we simply purchased a spiral bound scrap book style photo album, like this...

Then I bought crayons, markers, and good 'ole regular pens. We placed these items in a cool container by the book, and created a frame with the phrase "Draw a picture. Write a poem. Share some words of wisdom."

To give guests a clue as to what we were doing (because it was different), I brought the guest book to the rehearsal dinner and had the parents and wedding party do their signing there. Guest love visuals!

Charming Design Inspirations

Happy Friday!

The other day I was feeling inspired...

wanting to create a sweet,

romantic, charming vintage-inspired table with lots

of fun details for a project that I am working on.

I was pleased as punch with the way it turned out...

so I just had to share!

There are a lot of little details and ideas found here

that a bride {or bridesmaid} can easily be incorporated

into a wedding, bridal shower, or bridesmaids tea/luncheon.

A chandelier of found branches hangs from the camellia tree,
adorned with ribbons and miniature paper globes,
it creates a whimsical focal point.
Imagine a fantastic cake sitting under the chandelier!

A view from overhead.

A nest provides the perfect spot for a paper globe to rest.
A glittering monogram awaits the guest.
A truffle, your favorite candy, or
another special treat can nest here.

A simple glass container set a top a silver tray
is home to a bed of moss, baby's breath
and gorgeous red camellias.
I just love baby's breath when it is paired with
the unexpected or grouped in a large, full bunch.
Carnations rock this way too!

Petite vases on either side of the main
centerpiece hold pink baby roses.

A shot of the overall place setting - my favorite
find last week were these pink basket weave plates.
I paired them with toile saucers and
a rose/love themed larger plate.
A glass and pitcher set with a platinum rim.
I used that because it complimented
my tea cups with the platinum rim.

I played with the linens a lot.
First I laid a basic white linen,
then layered burlap on top
{I am officially in love with burlap these days}.
I topped the burlap with a small embroidered square linen.
The napkins are simple and ecru.
I just loved the look of the contrast between
the smooth, rough, and vintage layers.

Crystals were add for some sparkle.

I used some decorative iron garden chairs,
wrapped them in a lightweight white fabric
and tied them off with a strip of burlap.
Tucking some baby's breath, and topping the chair
with a vintage doilie finished the look.

I Want the Sand Between My Toes...But What Are We Supposed to Wear?

I have had a few questions pop up regarding

what to wear for a beach wedding.

For this one, I thought I would call in an expert,

Deborah LaFranchi of La Franchi Couture

to share her expertise and knowledge.

With over 20 years of experience, she knows

what a bride and her entourage need.

Thinking of having a beach wedding? Perhaps you are lucky enough to live close to the ocean or maybe a destination wedding on some exotic beach is what you have in mind. Either way, Mother Nature will be alive and well and part of the wedding so you will need to take her into consideration when planning a beach wedding.

The beach is usually breezy so you need to think about the wind. When choosing a gown, you want to make sure it isn't something that will fly up easily should a sudden gust of wind come your way. This will be a choice of materials. Don't pick fabrics such as chiffon or gauze or lightweight silk. Make sure the material has some weight to it so you have one less thing to worry about.

Also, beaches tend to be sunny and hot, whether it's humid like the Caribbean or dry like Malibu, be sure your gown is comfortable. A strapless gown will be the coolest and won't show embarrassing underarm sweat marks the way a gown with sleeves might. If you tend to get cold or chilled, have a wrap or stole handy that can be added if you need it last minute in case there is a change in temperature. Make sure this is chosen when getting your gown so it co-ordinates with it and looks
like it was part of your ensemble.

Veils may become a nusance as you may just end up fighting it in the wind both during the ceremony and pictures. But DO make sure you wear something in your hair. A bride looks unfinished without some sort of head adornment. Flowers are the perfect compliment to any hairstyle and beach wedding. Beautiful combs, clips and tiaras are other options to explore, but this designer says something in your hair is a MUST!

You may also want to have a hairstyle that is up and close to your head. This will also be a benefit in a windy or hot setting. It also gives an elegant look to any bride.

When choosing a gown, you probably don't want one with a long train when having a beach wedding. It will drag and collect sand and just feel uncomfortable. A small train is more manageable or even a short or ankle length gown might be your choice. Shoes can always be optional at a beach wedding but for safety sake you may want ballet slippers or classy sandals...please remember heels don't work in the sand.

When it comes to dressing your bridesmaids and mothers the same tips I have just given should apply. They too are in the same place with the same weather so you want to make sure they have thought of all the above elements.

So, how can you make your honeymoon even more romantic and memorable? Do a little pre-planning and surprise your spouse with a few treats {get your mind out of the gutter...or put it there...your choice!} to make this one-of-a-kind trip even more unforgettable. Check out these "Honeymoon Extras."

Start the trip off right. Use credit card mileage (or cold hard cash) to upgrade your airline seats to first class. Be careful you may never want to go "back."
Have a floral arrangement (reminiscent of your wedding flowers) waiting for you at the hotel. {The concierge can assist with this.}
Call ahead to the hotel concierge and have them deliver champagne, chocolate dipped strawberries {or another favorite treat} to your hotel room just prior to your arrival. You can even ask if they can sprinkle rose petals on the bed and light a few candles. Your spouse will be amazed!
Arrange for a romantic dinner. For example, just the two of you can dine in an amazing secluded, romantic location your own chef.
Arrange for in-room or a private couples massage.
Speak with the concierge about arranging tours or excursions in advance, especially if something is of special interest to you. Surprise your spouse with a favorite activities like a mountain bike ride down a volcano at sunset or an exclusive scuba dive.
Does it need to be said…pack some lingerie or whatever "does it for you!"

What's a Mother To Do?

Some envision the Mother of the Bride as a crazy woman intent on making every detail perfect for herself...not necessarily her daughter. Others see the Mother of the Bride as a joyous exuberant woman reveling in a day that is special for her too. And, of course there are a number of categories that fall between those that I mention. I recently had an email from a Mother of the Bride, so I thought I would jump into this subject.

Did you know the MOB is technically a member of the wedding party?
Here is a list of her official duties from the The Everything Wedding Etiquette Book: From invites to thank you notes - All you need to handle even the stickiest situations with ease (Everything Series).

Assists the bride in selecting her gown, accessories, and trousseau
Helps the bride select bridesmaid’s attire
Coordinates her attire with the mother of the groom
Works with bride, groom, and groom’s family to devise a seating plan
Helps address invitations
Helps attendants with coordinating the bridal shower
Generally assists the bride
Occupies a place of honor at the ceremony
Stands at the beginning of the receiving line
In most instances, acts as hostess of the reception
Occupies a seat of honor at the parent’s table

Of course, not all of the above duties will apply or be acceptable or even possible for all MOB's. As a wedding planner, I have seen brides and their mothers disagree in what is some times a power struggle. In those instances, it has been helpful to ask the MOB to assist with certain planning tasks that she can "run with"...within reason of course. Just be sure everyone is on the same page in terms of style, budget, etc. Ultimately, the MOB can be involved in every aspect of planning...if that is what the bride and her mother agree upon. Some specific duties the MOB can also assist with include:

Favor selection
Invitations selection
Plan the bridesmaids tea/luncheon
Research attendant gifts
Research other paperie...wedding programs, menu cards, escort cards
Help select wedding day accessories...ring pillow, candles, guest book.

When I was planning a wedding a few years back, the MOB lived across the country and had a lot of hostility towards the bride, the groom, and me. As it turns out all she really wanted was to feel needed and involved. The bride had no real opinions about her invitation, other than some wording, so we told MOB the colors of the wedding, and let her "go to town." She was happy...almost obsessed, and the bride was happy too.

What's the Mother of the Bride to wear?
This can be the million dollar question. Seriously I have seen MOB's show up in gowns more revealing and more dramatic than the brides....um,"not appropriate!" However, the styles of dress for a MOB are far reaching and very stylish...gone are the days of ruffly chiffon dresses, sensible shoes, and floppy hats (unless of course that's her thing!)...MOB style has evolved as weddings have. Just a few points a MOB should consider when it comes to attire:

The color should compliment the bridesmaids dresses and the colors of the wedding but need not be the same color.
Her dress should not upstage or outshine the bride's dress...no fire engine red for the Spring wedding, no inappropriate cleavage, etc...Get the picture?
Her dress should not be white...unless approved by the bride or called for, i.e. a "white wedding" theme.
Her dress does not need to match the Mother of the Groom's (MOG) dress. They should compliment each other in formality, but the colors do not need to match, nor must the styles be the same. The MOB should shop for her attire first and the MOG should follow the lead as far as formality is concerned.
She should always discuss her options with the daughter is there is any question in her mind. In fact, make it a fun "girls day" of shopping.

Finally, the MOB should not feel like she needs to shop in formalwear shops or bridal boutiques only. Department Stores and other women's retailers often carry a beautiful selection of clothing that is perfectly suited for MOB attire. The options are limitless. I tell my MOB's to go shop at their favorite specialty store first (provided they carry more formal attire) and then go from there..."remain true to your style and the right dress will be there and you too will feel confident and be radiant on the wedding day."

HIP TIP: As a wedding planner you do not know how many times I have heard Mom's (OK, all female guests, other than maybe Grandma) complain about corsages. No one wants the heavy flowers pulling on their expensive dress or making a water stain on delicate fabric. Consider a small bouquet for the mothers, a single flower, or even no flowers at all (it isn't a rule you know).

What everyone involved in planning a wedding must remember is that this is not only a right of passage for a couple, but it is also a rite of passage for the families. There are many emotions involved and all it takes is a little consideration on everyone's part to make the planning go smoothly.

We did this set up a couple of years ago

as part of a photo shoot, but...

I have this obsession with black and white right now,

I still LOVE this look, and it may provide

a little inspiration...so I just had to share!

Take a Seat!

No one ever said planning a wedding was easy.
Add to that the slew of urban legends and
myths associated with wedding planning,
and it can be confusing. While some of these myths
seem simple enough and, on the surface,
sometimes even logical, don't be fooled.
Dispelling the myths of wedding planning
will help you avoid disappointment.

On to the myth...

MYTH: I do not need a seating plan. I have no time for it and no one cares anyway.

TRUTH: If you are serving a meal (i.e. the guest will need to find a place to sit and eat), a seating plan falls just short of being considered a necessity. A seating plan is a courtesy that simply alleviates any uneasy feeling or uncomfortable moments as guest find a seat at the reception. If you’re planning a cocktail party, or not planning to serve a full meal, a seating plan isn’t necessary, but you should have enough tables and chairs to accommodate all of your guests.

I won't lie, seating plans can be complicated...and chances are not everyone is going to be happy, you just have to do your best at match and mixing up the guests. Once the responses are in and accounted for, try these tips to get you going:

Get a floor plan from the venue that outlines the layout of the room (dance floor, bar, guest book, gift table, etc.).
Know how many guests can be seated at each table. A good rule to follow is eight to ten guests at a sixty-inch round table.
Decide where you will be sitting, and where your family and bridal party will be sitting. Also determine what the seating arrangement will be for the wedding party and yourself - a head table, sweetheart table, feasting table, etc.
Ask for input from your families when determining who should sit where. (optional, but usually a good idea).
Determine if their are any guests with special needs, such as your grandparents not wanting to be sitting next to the college "party" crowd, or guests with young children being seated right next to the bands speakers. Additionally, be sure to account for any guests with a disability.
Match guests up by families, where you know them from, or by similar interests. From here you will be playing a card game of sorts, mix and matching until you have the right guests at the “right” seats. Try to avoid playing matchmaker with the single guests, it could be uncomfortable.

I have seen brides work with all sorts of "tools" for placing the guests at tables...Post it notes with the guests names, spread sheets, dry erase boards (think football coach)...you have to decide how you can best visualize the seating arrangements...there is no right or wrong answer.

HIP TIP: Always be sure to formulate and print out (at least 2) alphabetized guest lists with the guests table assignment. Give the list to the wedding planner, location manager, or banquet captain...you never know when the guest is going to set down the escort card with their cocktail napkin...and bye-bye to the trash it goes.

So, once you have the seating plan down,

you need to direct the guests to the right seat...

and how are you going to do that?....

A Fab DIY: What's On Your Plate?

What's on your cake table?

Of course you have heard that you

“have to have” a cake knife and server

on your wedding accessory checklist,

but what about a charming cake plate

that can become a family heirloom.

HIP TIP: It is not always necessary to purchase
your own knife and server…

just ask the caterer or venue if they have a set you can use.

Now that we covered that…consider this…

Why don’t you get your DIY on and design your
own heirloom cake plate?

This is seriously one of the best totally cool touches

I have seen in awhile….and it is easy as pie (or cake!).

How special would it be to eat your first slice of

wedding cake together off of this plate and

then be able to take it home and cherish it...

even enjoy a slice of cake on your first anniversary

or other special occasions too.

(DIY Directions below)

This plate can be customized with a monogram, a special motif…

pretty much anything you want that can be done in silhouette style.

Charming DIY Heirloom Cake Plate

Supplies

Glass cake plate (you could do it on a bigger plate, but the smaller works better for the cake)
Enamel paint in black (paint for glass...make sure it is opaque)
Paint brush
Enamel spray paint in white (or your choice of color)
Clear acrylic sealer in gloss
Design, such as a monogram, silhouette, motif
Masking tape
Permanent marker with fine tip (Like a Sharpie)

Directions

Clean: the back of the glass plate with soap and water, a cleaning solution, or rubbing alcohol to get it really clean.
Design: Search for free clip art, silhouette clip art on the Internet) of just “blow up your monogram/initials in any word processing program to the size you want and print it out. I actually used Microsoft Publisher, made a text box that was 4.5 x 4.5 and typed my “L” into it. Then adjusted font style and size until it fit in the box (and thus on the plate) they way I like it. NOTE: It may be necessary to print “mirror image” so that the letter, etc. is pointing the way you want.
Cut: Trim up the paper to be a size that is easily taped to the plate.
Tape: Using masking tape, affix the image to the front side of the plate, centered or placed however you prefer.
Trace: On the back side of the plate, use a permanent marker (such as a sharpie) to trace the outline of the design.Remove image and tape…it will be easier to see the outline better.
Paint: Begin painting with the black paint, within the outline of the image. Finish painting and leave to dry completely.
Clean: When you know it is all dry, gently clean the back of the plate again to get any smudges, etc. that may have gotten on the plate during the black painting layer.
Prep: Cover a well-ventilated area with newspaper, paper bags, or a drop cloth and set your dry plate on it with the backside (painted side) facing up.
Spray: With even strokes, spray the white paint. You may need to let it dry and spray again.
Let dry completely. DO NOT put the painted side down, stack the plate, etc. until you finish the next step with the sealer...it will chip!
When dry, again, using protective covering for your work area, spray the back with the acrylic sealer.
Let dry completely...

…and Voila! A charming heirloom cake plate…

A special memento that you can keep and use for years to come.

Yes! You can eat off of this plate...all the paint is on the back.

TIPS

Patience is key. This DIY is not hard if you have patience. If you don't (like me), it is easy to smudge and chip the plate. AGAIN LET EACH LAYER DRY COMPLETELY!
Let each step of the painting process dry thoroughly Seriously, I cannot stress this enough!).
Do not move your plate while spraying the color on the back…until it is dry.
Do not move the plate while spraying the sealer on the plate…until it is dry.
If any paint gets on the rim or front of the plate, it can be removed with a gentle rubbing...I used Goof Off to get off a stubborn area. This should be done after sealing.
Pick your deisgn based on your artistic level. For example, I have a bold hand, so fine details were not in the cards for me, but I have seen one with finer details...AMAZING!
I recommend gently handwashing it.

A few posts ago, I was talking about "Engagement Season"

and in the comments Crimson Flames asked,

"So what about stuff like going down on a knee?

Is there anything you expect him to do to make it perfect?"

Well, I thought - Ta-Da! - let's chat about it!

What do women expect these days?

Do they expect a man to get down on one knee?

Do they expect a the question to be flashed on
the scoreboard at the Kings game?

Do they want to be flown to Paris and
receive their ring atop the Eiffel Tower?

I think there is no one size fits all answer...
if you are going to be asking someone to marry you,
hopefully you know what kind of gal she is.
Let that be your guide.

If she is the traditional romantic type, I say
"Get down on one knee and do it the old-fashioned way!"
Really, can you wrong with that anyhow?

If she likes to be the center of attention and
you know she'll be Twittering or texting seconds after the proposal,
do it B-I-G, do it in public, do it when her friends or family are around
(just be sure ya are about 100% sure the answer will be "YES!").

If she is the adventurous type, whisk her away to a romantic locale...
it doesn't have to be Paris...to pop the question.

Still wondering what to do...when I was a wedding planner
some of the best proposal I heard were:

Re-enacting their first date experience -
same activity, same restaurant, etc.

Popping the question at the location of the first kiss.

Sending the lucky lady on a treasure hunt around the city
to points of interest and meaning with the final destination
being the man and the ring at a fabulous location.

I also saw couples surprise everyone else with a party
that turned into a Surprise Engagement Party.

Engagement Season is Here!

Did you know the holidays are one of the most - if not the most - popular times for getting engaged? What a perfect gift to give and to receive...an engagement ring!...But this post is not about the engagement ring, it is about the actual act of getting engaged. When he pops the question, what do you do first? Scream, yell, cry, call your mom, call your best friend? After you do that what do you do...post it on your blog, send an email...what is a girl to do?

Here is the scoop on engagement etiquette!

Do you need to a ring to be officially engaged?
A ring or a date is not necessary for your engagement to be considered official. This is quite simply a matter of him proposing. If he asks, and you accept, you are officially engaged. However….most people (i.e. your parents) will take it more seriously if there is some sort of ring involved (Just being honest here!)

Does my fiancé need to ask permission for my hand in marriage?

For the most part, this custom is no longer applicable, but some men do still choose to follow with tradition. Ultimately you and he should really think about what your parents would prefer…it can simply be a sign of respect.

Does the ring have to have a diamond?

Nope…anything will do, even a simple gold band. Don’t get caught up in what it is supposed to be, but rather what it means.

Does the ring really need to equal two months salary?

First, see above question. Next, an engagement ring should not cost more than you and your future spouse can afford to spend. The price of the ring should be proportional to the size of your income.

How do we decide which set of parents to tell first?

Traditionally the bride-to-be’s family is told first. The groom’s family is told next. Once this is done, the groom’s family contacts your parents. If your parents are divorced, his parents should call the parent who raised you, and then call the other parent later if the two of you are still close. As a side note, if one of you has children, tell them right away. You have no obligation to tell an ex-spouse right away…unless there are children involved.

My parents are divorced. Whom should I tell first?

If you still live with a parent, they should be the first to know. Otherwise, whichever parent raised you or you are the closest to should be told first. However (there is almost always a “however”) if say your parents are divorced and your Dad loves your fiancé, but your mom, who raised you, doesn’t…all bets are off…I’d tell Dad first!

So, that said....do you have a good engagement story?

Who did you tell first and how did you tell them?

My hubby proposed on Christmas morning. I called all my closest friends and my husbands family first (he called them) because we were going to see my parents later in the day...they didn't expect it...I didn't expect it...and we wanted to see the looks on their faces.

So what happened...we walked in wished everyone a Merry Christmas, gave hugs, kisses, helped in the kitchen....nothing. My brother walks in looks at me, and says "Dude, there is a ring on your finger!" My mom was speechless...in a good way!
